I stood by the window, pretending I could see. Directly outside was a tall, slender tree whose name I didn’t know, and a osmanthus tree that had never bloomed. Farther away stood the elementary school with its yellow walls and black tiles, flanked by farmhouses in front and backed by a dense grove of trees. Beyond the impenetrable treetops stretched a pale sky, against which the dark chaos took shape. The lights went out, and I pretended I could see, listening to the barks of dogs and the chirps of insects, waiting for someone in the darkness to find the long-kept candles.
